Matcha Bowl (Chawan) in Tbilisi
A proper chawan: wide, shallow, glazed, with a spout on one side so you can pour the whisked bowl straight into a glass of milk. The one piece of equipment that changes how your matcha turns out.
Why the shape matters
A chawan is wide and shallow on purpose. The whisk needs room to travel and a flat floor to work the powder against; in a tall mug the tines hit the sides, the water climbs the walls, and the powder stays in clumps at the bottom. This bowl is sized so a standard chasen can move freely with 60 ml of water in it.
The spout
Traditional chawan have no spout, and pouring one into a latte glass is a small mess every time. This one has a lip. Whisk in the bowl, pour into the glass, top with milk — no third piece of washing up.
Care
It is fully glazed, so it washes like any other ceramic and is dishwasher safe, though hand washing keeps the glaze brighter for longer. Do not take it from a hot wash to cold water — glaze crazes at the shock, not at the temperature.
Questions people ask
Can I use a normal bowl instead?
Any wide, flat-bottomed bowl will do a reasonable job — a cereal bowl beats a mug. What does not work is anything tall and narrow.
What size is it?
Around 11 cm across and 6 cm deep — the standard working size, big enough for a double bowl and small enough to hold in one hand.
Is it cheaper in the set?
Yes. The bowl, whisk and sifter together are 150 ₾, against 120 ₾ for the bowl and whisk alone — so the sifter effectively costs 30 ₾ inside the set.

Keeping it
Keep the tin closed, cool and out of the light. Matcha fades in daylight and picks up smells in a fridge, so a cupboard beats a fridge door. Once opened it is at its best within two months.
